No matter what type of cast iron pan you choose, remember to season it before use to ensure the best results. This prevents the food from sticking and helps to build up a nonstick coating. To season a cast iron skillet pan, heat a few tablespoons of oil in it and spread it around the surface. Turn the heat up to medium-high and cook for 10 minutes or until the oil starts to smoke. Let the pan cool and then wipe it down with a paper towel.

Also, remember to use your cookware for cooking food that is specified for it. For example, use dosa tawa only to make dosas and roti tawa only for rotis or chapatis. Similarly, cooking pans are meant for making omelettes, stir-fry vegetables or shallow frying meat. With proper care and maintenance, your frying pan can last for years.  From Indus Valley, you can buy Frying pan or pre seasoned cast iron skillet or any other cast iron cookware that will help you give hassle free cooking from day one.

Cast Iron Cookware & Why It Is Important For You

The cookware that you use is one of the factors that supports in having good health, body and mind. As someone who cares about your family’s health, it is recommended to ditch your non-stick cookware with natural cookware, such as cast iron and iron utensils.

Jumping right into the topic, here we share how cast iron cookware is good for you and what are the benefits of cooking with cast iron

What are the health benefits of cooking with cast iron?

  • Medical experts agree on the fact that cast iron cookware truly contributes to boosting health, nutrition in-take and well-being, in a natural manner.
  • Because cast iron utensils are made from natural material, they are quite safe for preparing meals as well as for one’s health.
  • Cast iron cookware, when heated, releases iron in the food that is prepared in it. Understandably thus, cast iron utensils are good for improving health in terms of maintaining our haemoglobin level. Those who have iron deficiency (anaemic) can thereby make use of cast iron cookware
  • Cast iron utensils can support in building one’s immunity and stamina.
  • Earlier, cast iron vessels were commonly used. Owing to this, the generation of those times were notably healthier and more active than the new-gen that majorly has a sedentary lifestyle and prefers fast food. As they say, old is gold!

Other benefits of cooking with cast iron

  • Interestingly, cast iron cookware has the tendency to enhance the food’s flavour. Dishes prepared in cast iron utensils not only become iron-rich but also taste better than the ones cooked in nonstick cookware.
  • Dosas come out perfectly well - tasty with crispy texture - when made on cast iron tawa. Similarly, paneer tikka made on a cast iron grill pan or any curry made in cast iron kadai will achieve a nice, rustic taste.
  • Cast iron utensils are ideal for preparing traditional cuisines and for dishes that require long, slow cooking. Some of them are even designed to be induction cookware.
  • Cast iron cookware is good for even heating and heat retention.

Why choose cast iron utensils for nonstick cookware?

In this age, there is no kitchen that doesn’t have a nonstick tawa or non-stick kadai. Yes, nonstick is very comfortable to use, light in weight and affordable. However, it silently carries harmful chemicals that are not good for our health. Most of the nonstick utensils consist of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) aka Teflon. Here are things that follow next:

  • This chemical turns very dangerous when overheated. And when it happens the chemical gets released in the food that is prepared in the cookware.
  • Nonstick cookware when heated excessively, beyond a certain temperature, gives out fumes that neither have odour nor are they visible.
  • When living beings - both humans and animals - inhale these harmful fumes on a regular basis, after some years may face health issues such as flu, fever, sore throat, headaches, to name a few.
  • With longer usage, nonstick cookware can even trigger birth issues in pregnant women, low sperm count and even cancer.
  • The chemicals from the nonstick cookware once enters our bodies or the environment will stay there forever. It takes years for the harmful chemicals to break down, degrade or decompose. The chemicals are therefore nicknamed as forever chemicals.

So you see, using nonstick cookware is not advisable. Even if you are using nonstick utensils, it is recommended to do your cooking wisely - by not overheating them. It is not good to keep using damaged or cookware that has scratches. You need to keep changing nonstick cookware after a couple of years, because worn out products are more harmful for your health. Instead of depending on the silent killer nonstick induction pans and pots, it is better to start using cast iron or iron utensils.
