Here's a simple & healthy recipe for Beetroot and Carrot Idiyappam: Ingredients:

  • 2 cups rice flour
  • 1 cup beetroot, grated
  • 1 cup carrot, grated
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Salt to taste


1. Prepare the Vegetables: 

  • Peel and grate the beetroot and carrot.
  • Set them aside in separate bowls.

2. Prepare Idiyappam Dough:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine rice flour and a pinch of salt.
  • Boil 2 cups of water with a tablespoon of oil.
  • Gradually add the hot water to the rice flour, stirring continuously to form a smooth, soft dough.
  • Divide the dough into two equal parts.

3. Add Vegetables to Dough:

  • Mix the grated beetroot into one portion of the dough, kneading it well until the color is evenly distributed.
  • Repeat the process with the grated carrot for the other portion of the dough.

4. Shape Idiyappam:

  • Take a small portion of the beetroot dough and place it in the Idiyappam press. 
  • Press the dough through the press onto an Idiyappam plate or steamer in a circular motion to form spirals.
  • Repeat the process with the carrot dough.

5. Steam Idiyappam: 

  • Steam the shaped Idiyappam for about 10-15 minutes or until they are cooked and firm.

6. Serve:

  • Allow the Beetroot and Carrot Idiyappam to cool for a few minutes.
  • Serve warm with coconut chutney, vegetable curry, or any side dish of your choice.
