Question 1: What happens when I store water in a copper vessel?

Now that you understand the benefits of using copper bottles, it is important to understand how it works.

Have you noticed how everyone recommends storing water in copper bottles for a minimum of 3 hours or even overnight before use?

Numerous magazines and health gurus like NDTV and The Hindu recommend we store water in copper vessels before drinking it. Have you wondered why?

Here is the answer to your question. When you store water in copper bottles overnight, a small amount of copper ions gets dissolved into the water (Called as Oligodynamic effect). This acts as an antimicrobial agent and has the ability to destroy a wide variety of harmful microbes, molds, fungi, etc. This makes your water safe to drink.

Did you notice that your copper bottle got a little dark on the inside? Do not be afraid, this happens in copper.

Usually copper turns black because it forms copper oxide. As you store water in a copper vessel overnight, and it will black due to oxidation. This is good, this means your bottle is pure and is working to clean the water.

Your bottle will return to its original color on washing. Here is a blog with the top 5 easy ways to clean your bottle.

Question 4: Can I use my copper bottle for juice or milk?

NO.

Copper is great for the water glass. It keeps your water safe and clean.

However other liquid like juice and milk is not a great fit for copper.

The reason being, copper is not good with acidic food. Milk has lactic acid. Juices like orange juice have citric acid.

The acid will react with the bottle and ruin the taste of the juice. It is difficult to track which juices have organic acids and which do not. As a rule, avoid all liquids other than water in a copper bottle.

The Indus Valley’s Recommended Golden Practice:

Use your The Indus Valley copper bottle for water only. Do not use it for storing other liquids.

Question 5: Can I pour hot water into my copper bottle?

NO.

Copper bottles purify your water with oxidization. When you add hot water, the process gets disturbed. Additionally, since copper is a metal it will absorb the heat and it will become difficult to carry a hot water bottle.

While it is fine to fill your copper water bottle with warm water, we recommend against filling it with hot or boiling water.

Hot/boiling water can negatively affect your bottle. Hot water makes the copper reactions faster and potentially causes the water to absorb too much copper from your bottle (the greater the temperature of the water, the more capable it is of absorbing metals such as copper).

The healthiest way to use a copper bottle is to drink room temperature or lukewarm water.

The Indus Valley’s Recommended Golden Practice:

Always use room temperature water and store it in your bottle overnight for maximum benefit.

Question 6: Can I put my copper bottle in the deep freezer?

NO.

We do not recommend using your copper bottle in the deep freezer. The reactions working to purify your water, happen best at room temperature. Do not freeze as you will lose the benefit.

When it Ayurveda, it recommends drinking room temperature or lukewarm water rather than cold water.

Image this, your body is busy working to digest your food to get energy. Room temperature water is useful and helps better digestion.

In contrast, drinking cold water can potentially freeze the enzymes in our gut. This will slow down digestion and will likely increase the number of toxins in our bodies.

In addition, cold water generally causes a contraction of blood vessels. This increases the chances that toxins will remain inside your body rather than being excreted through your lymphatic system.
